Amidst considerable upheaval at Manchester United, it appears Jadon Sancho is plotting a return to familiar pastures, demonstrating a willingness to accept a major pay cut in order to facilitate the move.
The English winger, who rejoined Manchester United at the opening of this summer’s transfer window following a spell at Chelsea, seems keen to reroute back to Borussia Dortmund, a club where he once shone brightly. Chelsea, deciding against a permanent acquisition, had parted ways with Sancho after a mixed loan tenure, which saw them reluctantly pay a £5 million penalty fee to United.
Since his 2021 switch from Borussia Dortmund to Old Trafford for a staggering £73 million, Sancho has struggled to justify such a hefty price tag. Now, under the regime of Ruben Amorim, the winger is deemed surplus to requirements as United undergo an intensive squad overhaul.
Despite tentative links with various Premier League and European outfits, whispers of a Dortmund return are gaining momentum. According to BILD, a reputable German publication, Sancho is prepared to make tangible financial sacrifices to pave his path back to Dortmund, a club where he previously played his finest football.
It’s understood Sancho is content to relinquish a significant portion of his current salary—reportedly earning around €16 million annually at United—in favour of a halved wage to secure his beloved Dortmund comeback. This pay cut would position him within Dortmund’s upper middle range of earners, albeit not amongst the top paid like Niklas Süle.
While Manchester United show little appetite for Sancho’s continued presence, Chelsea legend Roberto Di Matteo still foresees a bright future for him, asserting that the winger harbours the potential to become “one of the greatest in the game.” Di Matteo expressed, “It’s completely down to Jadon Sancho, his mentality, and what he wants to achieve with his career.”
Sancho sparked into life during his previous Dortmund tenure and even helped the German side to a Champions League final. Di Matteo contends this glimpse of brilliance underscores the player’s unrealised capacity for greatness—a promise yet to be consistently fulfilled in England.
