Roma’s ownership has reportedly given their recruitment team the nod to pursue Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee in the upcoming January transfer window. The Red Devils, who struggled offensively last season, saw Zirkzee and fellow forward Rasmus Hojlund net a mere seven league goals combined under former manager Erik ten Hag.
Under the current stewardship of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, the club invested around £200 million in attackers Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha, aiming to bolster their front line under manager Ruben Amorim. However, questions linger over Sesko’s form—having netted just twice this season—and Zirkzee, who has only started thrice in the Premier League.
Despite a potential shortage in attacking options, reports from Italy suggest Roma’s sporting director Frederic Massara has been authorised by the Friedkin ownership group to negotiate directly with Manchester United for Zirkzee. The player’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, has indicated Zirkzee’s keen interest in a Serie A return. Talks are at an early stage, with a proposed loan agreement featuring a mandatory €35 million purchase clause on the cards.
Simultaneously, the future of Man Utd midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has sparked interest. While some sources claim Amorim is hesitant to offload Mainoo this January, Defensa Central in Spain reports that Real Madrid need to act swiftly to outmanoeuvre Barcelona and others for his signature. Although Barcelona have shown intent, Mainoo reportedly has a preference for the Bernabéu if a move materialises.
Amidst this, ex-Everton CEO Keith Wyness has hinted at Chelsea’s interest in Mainoo, suggesting the midfielder could seek to “reinvent himself” at Stamford Bridge over the upcoming transfer windows.
Wyness shared with Football Insider: “Mainoo is undoubtedly talented but seemingly hasn’t meshed with Amorim’s style. Chelsea’s been touted as a potential destination, where he might find a revived role.”
