Tottenham Hotspur appear to be encountering significant obstacles in any potential pursuit of Real Madrid’s Rodrygo, despite speculation linking the Brazilian with a departure from the Spanish capital. Under the new regime of head coach Xabi Alonso, Rodrygo has found himself on the periphery, with the manager favouring different attacking options during his initial tenure.
Across six Club World Cup fixtures this past summer, the 24-year-old managed a mere 92 minutes of play, fueling rumours of a potential switch to the English Premier League. Although Arsenal and Liverpool were initially rumoured to be interested, their focus reportedly lies elsewhere, leaving Tottenham as the latest club linked with the Brazilian.
Spanish outlet AS suggests Spurs have approached Los Blancos regarding a transfer for Rodrygo, with the Spanish giants reportedly setting a price tag of £78 million (€90 million). This comes amid speculation surrounding Son Heung-min’s possible departure to MLS outfit LAFC, following Tottenham’s pre-season tour in South Korea. Rodrygo, with his collection of silverware and knack for crucial goals at Real Madrid, would certainly fit the bill as a marquee addition.
However, sources at football.london indicate there’s little truth to the rumours of Rodrygo being bound for north London. Furthermore, The Athletic reports that the player himself harbours no desire to make the move to Tottenham.
The recent acquisitions of Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus suggest that additional wide forwards are not on the agenda for Spurs. Thomas Frank, addressing squad depth and positional choices, recently indicated: “I think it’s vital we have a deep squad. Richarlison, I see primarily as a striker capable of playing wide. Sonny offers versatility, able to cover both roles. Mathys Tel is a winger but can also operate as a striker. We need varied skill sets.”
