Liverpool have emerged as the leading contenders to secure the services of former Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez, currently shining at Atletico Madrid. Reports suggest that the Merseyside club is readying an ‘aggressive strategy’ to clinch the Argentine’s signature next summer.
Under the stewardship of Arne Slot, the reigning Premier League champions have enjoyed a flawless start to the campaign, triumphing in their opening five fixtures, establishing a five-point cushion at the table’s summit. Slot, enjoying his sophomore season at Anfield, has bolstered his ranks with eight fresh acquisitions, headlined by the arrivals of Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, and Florian Wirtz.
Slot’s array of attacking talent is already the envy of their rivals, boasting the likes of Isak, Mohamed Salah, Federico Chiesa, Cody Gakpo, Ekitike, and the prodigious Rio Ngumoha. Yet, with the departures of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz in the recent transfer window, and Chiesa’s Anfield future uncertain, Liverpool are keen to further fortify their forward options in anticipation of the 2026 season.
Sources in Spain, namely Fichajes, have posited that Alvarez, who netted 17 times in last season’s La Liga campaign, is Liverpool’s prime target. Barcelona have expressed interest in the prolific striker, relishing his ‘goal-scoring instinct and ability to sway matches.’ However, insiders reckon Liverpool are best placed to secure his services, viewing Alvarez as ‘the ideal recruit to enhance their attacking calibre’.
Amid reports of Barcelona initiating preliminary discussions with Alvarez, Liverpool are purportedly crafting an ‘aggressive strategy,’ perceiving this as a ‘unique opportunity’ not to be squandered.
Adding to the intrigue, former Manchester United stalwart Gary Neville, analysing Liverpool’s scintillating start, remarked on Sky Sports: “It’s ominous for their rivals. They’re yet to hit their stride, with a perfect record and the squad still to be optimised.”
Reflecting on Liverpool’s hefty summer investments, Neville observed: “Wirtz, Isak – there’s a quarter of a billion’s worth of talent not yet fully unleashed. They have immense potential and are yet to gel entirely.”
With their intent clear and their form foreboding, Liverpool’s pursuit of Alvarez could very well be the next chapter in their quest for domestic and European dominance.
