Marcus Rashford is reportedly a “very lucky boy” following his unexpected transfer from Manchester United to Barcelona. Despite underwhelming performances in recent seasons, the La Liga champions have acquired Rashford on loan with an option to buy for approximately £26 million.
Having faced criticism for both poor form and attitude at Old Trafford, Rashford’s fortunes took a turn during a brief but effective loan spell at Aston Villa, where he contributed six goals and four assists in just 17 appearances. This resurgence attracted attention, culminating in the Spanish giants taking a gamble on the England forward after missing out on other targets.
While former Premier League striker Stan Collymore lauded Barcelona’s end of the deal, he condemned it as a “poor” piece of business for Manchester United. Speaking to Caught Offside, Collymore remarked, “It’s unbelievable for the player—despite a lacklustre season at United and a merely decent spell at Villa, Rashford now finds himself at one of the world’s premier clubs.”
Collymore also suggested that a move to a Championship club such as Blackburn might have been more appropriate for Rashford, given his recent performances. “If football operated on logic,” he opined, “Rashford would be joining an aspirational Championship side, rather than one of the globe’s elite.”
The deal raises questions about how Rashford, without recent standout performances, could dictate a move to a top club like Barcelona. Collymore attributes this to Barcelona’s current financial strategies, enabling them to secure a potentially motivated asset at a bargain price.
Though Rashford has landed on his feet with this high-profile move, many within the football community wonder whether a step down and revitalisation at a lower-tier club might have served his career better in the long term.
