Marcus Rashford is keen to extend his stay at Barcelona beyond this season, but uncertainty looms as the Catalan club remain unconvinced about sealing a permanent deal for the English forward.
Following a summer loan move from Manchester United, Rashford has been a notable asset for Barcelona, contributing six goals and seven assists across 19 appearances. Despite his commendable performance under manager Hansi Flick, Rashford faces an uncertain future at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona have the option to secure Rashford on a permanent basis for €30 million. However, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Spanish giants are in no rush to trigger this clause. “Barcelona will take their time,” Romano stated in mid-November, adding that while the club is pleased with Rashford’s progress, they are holding off on a final decision.
Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, echoed this sentiment, expressing satisfaction with Rashford’s contributions but urging patience. “We’re happy with him, but now isn’t the time to decide,” Deco told Cadena SER. This is reinforced by Rashford’s recent dip in form, having failed to provide a goal or assist since the November international break.
As it stands, the prospect of Rashford returning to Old Trafford is becoming increasingly likely. The forward has slipped down the pecking order at Barcelona as their injury woes subside, and the club’s hierarchy, including President Joan Laporta, are sceptical about the financial wisdom of the acquisition, primarily due to Rashford’s age and salary demands.
Reports suggest Barcelona are already scouting potential replacements, with Koln’s Said El Mala, Lyon’s Malick Fofana, and RB Leipzig’s Antonio Nusa being considered as alternatives. The final decision on Rashford’s future, however, will not be made until the season’s end in May, leaving Manchester United and their loanee in limbo for the foreseeable future.
