Mauricio Pochettino has hinted at the possibility of making a return to English football, as he offered his insight into what former club Tottenham Hotspur should set their sights on achieving.
Following an underwhelming campaign that saw Tottenham finish 17th under Ange Postecoglou, the club appointed Thomas Frank as head coach over the summer. Frank has since propelled Spurs to sixth place after ten matches in the current Premier League season. In Europe, Spurs have shown promising form, with two victories and two draws in the Champions League group stage. Despite this progress, some critics remain sceptical about Frank’s tactical approach.
While Frank’s job may not be immediately at risk given the significant improvement from the previous season, the idea of Pochettino’s return could stir excitement among the north London faithful. Having previously earned an impressive 1.84 points per game, guiding Tottenham to a second-place Premier League finish and a Champions League final, Pochettino’s legacy at the club remains strong.
In a recent discussion with talkSPORT, Pochettino stated: “Maybe it’s possible. Yes, maybe my challenge in the future, of course, after the World Cup and being now focused on the USA national team, is maybe to come back one day to the Premier League. We were so close with Tottenham to win the Premier League and the Champions League. Tottenham is a club that deserves this type of titles, this type of trophies.”
Pochettino’s remarks suggest a strong desire to once again compete for top honours in England, be it with Spurs or another club. His comments also cast a shadow over Postecoglou’s success in breaking the team’s 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League, implying that the club’s aspirations should aim even higher.
Reflecting on his ambitions, Pochettino added: “And yes, why not one day come back to the Premier League? For me, the Premier League is the best league in the world, the most competitive. Why not have the possibility again to challenge and to be involved in the Premier League and to challenge for the big things?”
This potential comeback builds anticipation not just for Tottenham supporters, but also for enthusiasts of the English game, who may once again witness Pochettino plying his trade on these shores.
