Oliver Glasner, currently at the helm of Crystal Palace, and Eddie Howe, the steward of Newcastle United, have swiftly addressed the swirling rumours linking them to the Manchester United managerial position. This speculation follows the untimely departure of Ruben Amorim from Old Trafford.
The Red Devils made headlines on Monday morning, confirming Amorim’s sacking following a 1-1 stalemate against Leeds United. The fallout from this match saw Amorim direct a tirade towards the club’s board and his sceptics, resulting in his exit a mere 24 hours later. Darren Fletcher has been tasked with leading the squad in their upcoming clash against Burnley.
Reports suggest that the decision to part ways with Amorim had been made prior to the Leeds fixture, allegedly due to a rift with Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, over tactics and player acquisitions. United are expected to appoint an interim manager to support Fletcher until the campaign’s conclusion, while a permanent replacement is anticipated in the summer.
Transfer aficionado Fabrizio Romano weighed in on his YouTube channel, asserting, “Man Utd have opted to oust Ruben Amorim with immediate effect and are now pondering their next moves. Appointing a caretaker manager until season’s end appears probable before settling on a long-term successor in the summer.” Romano further mentioned that should appealing options arise, United might pursue a permanent appointment sooner.
Romano clarified Amorim’s contractual standing and addressed the notion of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s potential interim return to Old Trafford. “The decision was made at the club level, not a resignation. Amorim is contracted until 2027, so United must honour his salary unless a new arrangement is reached with another club.”
Amidst the conjecture regarding their association with the United role, Glasner asserted, “I’m not allowed to bet. These speculations are not relevant to my current position at Crystal Palace. It holds no value to entertain further questions on this matter.” Similarly, Newcastle’s Howe expressed contentment at St James’ Park: “No, not at this current moment. My priority is the satisfaction I derive from my work, bolstered by strong relationships within this club.”
Meanwhile, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking in Friday’s presser, acknowledged Amorim’s capabilities and conveyed his goodwill: “Rúben is a top manager, deserving respect. Decisions have been made, and I can only extend my best wishes for his future endeavours.”
It remains to be seen who will eventually take the reins at Old Trafford, as United embark on yet another quest for stability and success.
