Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is poised to hold discussions with the hierarchy at Manchester United today regarding the possibility of taking on the role of interim manager until the end of the season, according to reports. The Norwegian, formerly in charge at the club, has emerged as the leading candidate for the position following the departure of Ruben Amorim.
The decision to part ways with Amorim was made by the club on Monday, prior to United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds. United’s inconsistency in form has them currently sixth in the Premier League table, albeit only four points clear of 14th-placed Crystal Palace.
In an official statement, Man United announced: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United. Appointed in November 2024, Ruben led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May. However, with the team positioned sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly decided that now is the appropriate time for change.”
The club also expressed gratitude to Amorim, wishing him well for the future, and confirmed that Darren Fletcher would oversee the team’s next match against Burnley on Wednesday. The break between Amorim and the club reportedly stems from a disagreement over transfer policies and tactical formations, which culminated in a heated outburst following their recent draw against Leeds.
According to independent journalist Marco Alcaraz, Solskjaer is set to meet Man Utd chiefs today, including Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada. Alcaraz shared on social media platform X: “Exclusive. Ole Gunnar Solskjær will meet the Man Utd hierarchy TODAY to discuss becoming caretaker manager until the summer. OGS wants the role, and several key figures inside the club see him as the leading candidate.”
The club seems determined to secure an interim manager swiftly before a permanent appointment is made at season’s end. Solskjaer’s potential return adds a fascinating twist to a crucial period for the Red Devils.
