Newcastle United’s pursuit of Benjamin Sesko has hit a stumbling block after RB Leipzig reportedly rejected their initial offer, which fell short of the German club’s valuation. This development could potentially boost Manchester United’s efforts to sign the young talent.
The Magpies had tabled an offer of £65.5 million with an additional £4.3 million in potential add-ons over the weekend, a figure they believed met Leipzig’s financial demands. However, as reported by the well-informed David Ornstein, Leipzig are holding firm on their requirement for a sell-on clause to be included in the deal.
Manchester United, also keen on acquiring the Slovenian forward, must address their own player sales before diving into the transfer market for Sesko. The Red Devils could benefit from Newcastle’s failure to meet Leipzig’s terms, as it provides them with an opportunity to pounce.
Newcastle’s chase for Sesko has gained momentum after their striker Alexander Isak expressed a desire to join Liverpool. Arne Slot’s side made a hefty £110 million attempt for Isak, which was turned down last Friday.
Sesko, 22, remains undecided about his next career move amidst interest from both Premier League clubs. Arsenal had previously been in the race but ultimately chose to secure Viktor Gyokeres, whilst Chelsea switched their focus to Liam Delap and Joao Pedro.
On another note, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe finds himself in a delicate situation following Isak’s training sessions with former club Real Sociedad as his potential move to Liverpool looms. Howe, receiving updates largely from afar, stated that managing such high-stakes deals is fraught with uncertainty.
The Magpies boss conveyed his ongoing support for Isak, hoping he will remain in the fold, but he acknowledged the vagaries of the transfer landscape, stating, “The reality is we still support Alex in every way, and my wish is that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again.”
As Newcastle’s pursuit of Sesko and the Isak saga unfolds, the Tyneside club undertake the intricate dance of the summer transfer window, with unforeseen twists and turns likely ahead.
