In a revealing interview, Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali has expressed that he would not “close the door” on a potential transfer, admitting an exit is “possible” for two main reasons. This comes amid the backdrop of Newcastle’s eventful summer transfer window, where Alexander Isak was sold to Liverpool for a British record fee of approximately £125 million. The departure saga with Isak saw him initially excluded from the pre-season tour in Asia, eventually culminating in his sale after replacements were acquired, including Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.
Despite a mixed start to the campaign, Tonali has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top midfielders. However, speculation around a return to Serie A persists, with the former AC Milan player leaving the door ajar for a move back to Italy. Tonali cited his connection to his homeland and the improving quality of Serie A as compelling reasons for not ruling out a future transfer.
“You can never know what will happen, I tell everyone it’s possible,” Tonali remarked. “I’m not closing the door on Italy; it’s my country. Maybe not now because I’ve found my balance at Newcastle, but the league is getting better and better, the level of the teams is rising.”
Reflecting on his current situation at Newcastle, Tonali shared, “I’m happy where I am now. I’ve found people who care about me, and I care about them. I don’t want to break any of the bonds I’ve built.”
Though he occasionally misses Italy, Tonali emphasised his commitment to the national team and his happiness with the Magpies. “Sometimes, when I am away from Italy for a long time or during long breaks, I do miss coming home a bit, but I always come back with the national team and I always give my best.”
As Newcastle fans hope to retain their midfield maestro, Tonali’s openness about his future keeps the rumour mill alive, underlining the ever-evolving landscape of football transfers.
