In a rather tumultuous twist to Manchester United’s summer transfer pursuits, reports suggest the Red Devils may miss out on a key signing as a European heavyweight has reportedly tabled a last-minute bid, potentially hijacking their well-laid plans.
United have been active this transfer window, splashing out around £200 million to bolster their attacking ranks with the acquisitions of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha. Despite these arrivals, manager Ruben Amorim is left with some crucial business to attend to before the window slams shut. With imminent departures expected for Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho, the funds could pave the way for a cut-price goalkeeper and a defensive midfielder.
With the unavailability of Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Manchester United have fixed their sights on securing Royal Antwerp’s 23-year-old goalkeeper, Senne Lammens. Noted journalist Fabrizio Romano indicated over the weekend that United were nearing a deal for the Belgian shot-stopper after personal terms were reportedly agreed.
However, an unexpected twist emerged as Sacha Tavolieri reported that negotiations between United and Royal Antwerp are far from finalised, with Galatasaray SK having presented a competing offer. Tavolieri noted that a Galatasaray delegation attended Royal Antwerp’s match, holding discussions with the club’s hierarchy in a bid to secure Lammens’ signature.
Lammens has also drawn interest from other notable clubs, including Manchester City and Inter Milan, suggesting a highly competitive race for the young goalkeeper’s services.
Adding more intrigue to the situation, Manchester United legend Gary Neville has revealed potential plans for Lammens within the club. Speaking to CBS Sports, Neville explained, “The word is the new arrival would serve as a No. 2, initially on the bench, but there is an urgent need for a No. 1.”
United’s transfer priorities are clear as they continue to address key areas, with goals being paramount for the forthcoming season. While hopes are pinned on Cunha, Mbeumo, and Sesko to deliver in attack, the goalkeeping situation, particularly with Andre Onana’s current standing, has posed a significant challenge.
Time is of the essence as Manchester United scramble to finalise crucial acquisitions before the transfer deadline, with a keen eye on securing reinforcements to partner Bruno Fernandes in midfield and to stabilise the goalkeeper position.
