Manchester United are reportedly gearing up for a major bid to secure the services of a Barcelona midfielder. The financial muscle behind the move is Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who appears ready to splash out a considerable sum.
The Red Devils have already been active in the transfer window, bringing in Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo for a combined fee of £127.5 million. Additional signings of young prospects Enzo Kana-Biyik and Diego Leon have taken their total summer expenditure to £134.8 million.
Despite these acquisitions, United’s boss Ruben Amorim remains keen on strengthening the squad further, particularly in the centre-forward position after missing out on Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal. Current discussions involve RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, although Newcastle United’s recent bid for the striker intensifies the competition for his signature.
Reports indicate that Amorim is also considering bringing in a replacement for goalkeeper Andre Onana, conditional upon the Cameroonian’s departure, while a new midfielder is yet another target.
Linked to Old Trafford in recent days is Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez. The 22-year-old midfielder impressed last season with eight goals and 10 assists in 46 appearances. United’s willingness to make an offer exceeding €70 million (£61.1 million) highlights their keen interest in Lopez, as they explore strengthening their midfield options.
Sources suggest that while Barcelona are aware of United’s interest, they are assessing the necessity of a large sale. Nevertheless, a transfer seems feasible in the coming weeks. Despite the allure of a substantial offer that reportedly could double his current salary, Fermin prioritises staying at the Catalan club, having earlier declined interest from a Saudi club, Chelsea, and Arsenal.
United’s pursuit has intensified recently, especially amid negotiations involving Marcus Rashford’s loan to Barcelona. However, these discussions did not directly relate to the talks about Lopez.
While Manchester United remain hopeful of persuading the talented Spaniard, Fermin Lopez holds a significant position in these negotiations, leaving the ultimate decision to him and his representatives. For now, the outcome remains uncertain, but the stage is set for an intriguing transfer saga.
