Michael Carrick has reportedly not been pegged as the ‘frontrunner’ for the permanent managerial role at Manchester United. Despite stepping in to replace Ruben Amorim at the start of the year and enjoying considerable early success as interim manager, Carrick faces stiff competition from a trio of high-profile candidates identified by the club.
Carrick’s interim tenure at Old Trafford commenced with an impressive six victories from his first seven matches, with significant improvements in performance attributed to tactical changes such as a shift to a four-man defence and key players being deployed in their optimum roles. However, Manchester United’s unbeaten streak came to an end with a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United, which followed a less-than-convincing win over Crystal Palace and a draw against West Ham.
Prior to the Newcastle fixture, reports from TEAMtalk had suggested Carrick was a strong contender for the job, described as the current ‘outstanding candidate’. Yet, according to a fresh update from Ben Jacobs on the United Stand YouTube channel, Carrick is not the current “frontrunner” for the permanent post.
Jacobs’ insights also dismissed the likelihood of England’s Thomas Tuchel and Brazil’s Carlo Ancelotti joining Manchester United, as both are projected to remain with their current teams through the upcoming World Cup. Instead, focus has shifted towards Roberto De Zerbi, Julian Nagelsmann, and Roberto Martinez as the club’s primary targets.
On the YouTube channel, Jacobs noted: “I don’t think we can call Michael Carrick the frontrunner for the job,” bolstering the talk around other names like De Zerbi, Nagelsmann, and Martinez, while Mauricio Pochettino and Kieran McKenna remain in consideration but are not seen as lead contenders.
TEAMtalk further elaborated that while Nagelsmann has shown interest in the role, Manchester United may be reticent to hire a manager who lacks English football experience. Despite being formidable candidates on paper, the club insists that familiarity with the Premier League is a crucial criterion for Amorim’s successor.
