In a development that could be seen as a significant setback for Manchester United, it has emerged that Chelsea are on the verge of completing a high-stakes £80 million transfer, shortly after acquiring Alejandro Garnacho from the Red Devils.
The prolific winger, Alejandro Garnacho, made the switch to Stamford Bridge late in the summer transfer window after becoming surplus to requirements at Old Trafford. Reports suggested his relationship with Man Utd head coach Ruben Amorim soured last season, resulting in Garnacho being grouped into what was colloquially known as the club’s ‘bomb squad,’ which also featured the likes of Antony, Tyrell Malacia, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford.
Garnacho, once a highly regarded prospect, found himself out of favour due to a dip in form and reputed attitude issues, coupled with his misalignment to Amorim’s favoured 3-4-3 system. Nevertheless, Chelsea seized the opportunity to swoop in with a £40 million bid, hoping to tap into Garnacho’s untapped potential.
Keith Wyness, the former Premier League CEO, has given his backing to the Blues’ strategy, hinting that the young winger could soon be sold for a significant profit. “I truly believe Garnacho will excel at Chelsea and potentially be sold for £70-80 million in the next transfer window,” Wyness elaborated to Football Insider. “United might have benefitted financially in the short term, but Chelsea seem to have snatched a gem.”
Meanwhile, the funds from Garnacho’s departure have partially facilitated Manchester United’s acquisition of Senne Lammens on deadline day. The 23-year-old, expected to step into the No.1 jersey after the international fixtures, has raised some eyebrows. Former goalkeeper Ben Foster criticised the move, labelling it a “panic buy,” voicing concerns over Lammens’ lack of top-flight experience. Foster remarked, “The pressure at United is unmatched, and while Lammens looks competent on initial viewing, the club appears not to have done a thorough check—a classic deadline day scramble.”
As the landscape of transfers continues to shift, it remains to be seen how these strategic moves will unfold in the fierce world of Premier League football.
