Rasmus Hojlund, the Danish forward, has found himself at the heart of transfer rumours, with Manchester United reportedly slapping a rather modest price tag of £30 million on him amid interest from RB Leipzig. The Red Devils are keen to streamline their squad following the signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego Leon this summer and are in pursuit of further reinforcements before the transfer window slams shut.
The club’s hierarchy, buoyed by INEOS’s backing, is eyeing acquisitions in the form of a striker, a defensive midfielder, and a goalkeeper. Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig has surfaced as the primary target for the striker position at Old Trafford as United look to offload certain players, including several from their so-called ‘bomb squad’.
Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and Tyrell Malacia join Hojlund in being potential departures following Marcus Rashford’s exit earlier in the summer. Despite Hojlund’s potential marginalization with the arrival of Sesko, the young Dane remains defiant, expressing his desire to stay and fight for his place in Erik ten Hag’s plans.
In his own words, Hojlund shared with the press this week, “The most important [thing] for me is to keep working hard and stay focused and then we’ll see what happens. My plan is very clear, and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot.”
Despite rumblings of Hojlund being used as a pawn in a deal to lure Sesko, it seems he has no interest in a switch to Leipzig, as he’s reportedly communicated his intentions to United’s management.
Last season saw Hojlund net a mere four Premier League goals, a statistic that contributed to United’s underwhelming offensive output, leaving them as the fifth-lowest scorers in the league. Chris Sutton, speaking to BBC Sport, remarked, “Have United been providing him with the chances and the opportunities? The answer to that is no… but has he ever been a prolific goalscorer? That would be the nagging doubt and is something I’ve debated with United fans.”
Adding another perspective, Stan Collymore suggested that a move to Aston Villa could rejuvenate Hojlund’s career, emphasising that a stint under a nurturing environment might be just what he requires to rebuild his confidence.
“He’s still a very young man… he should have gone to someone like Aston Villa first, scored you 25 goals and then moved to Manchester United two or three years down the line,” Collymore told Caught Offside in June.
