Manchester United have reportedly reached an ‘agreement in principle’ with Real Betis for the transfer of Brazilian winger Antony back to the Spanish club. This development provides a significant boost to United’s transfer plans as they aim to offload several fringe players before the September 1 deadline.
The Red Devils have splashed out around £200 million on new recruits this summer, with their attacking line-up significantly enhanced by the arrivals of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo. Consequently, United are keen to shed some players, including Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia, and Rasmus Hojlund, in a bid to balance their squad and finances.
Antony, who impressed during a loan spell at Real Betis last season, is highly sought after by the La Liga side for a permanent return. However, negotiations have been complicated by the Brazilian’s hefty wages and United’s reluctance to sanction another temporary move for one of their unsettled stars.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano disclosed last week that Real Betis have been striving diligently to finalise the deal, aiming for a successful conclusion. Romano noted on social media platform X that the Spanish club was “trying their best for Antony’s comeback,” holding ongoing talks with United to settle the terms and secure a ‘green light’ for the deal structure.
Further adding to the reports, Daily Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath confirmed that a provisional agreement had been reached, indicating that the 25-year-old is poised for a possible permanent move after an initial loan stint at Betis.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have endured a challenging start to the Premier League season, with only a point from their opening two fixtures. Former Sky Sports pundit Andy Gray expressed bewilderment over manager Erik ten Hag’s decision not to start Sesko against Fulham, stating his surprise at the omission of the club’s significant summer signing in the lineup.
In related coverage, United’s transfer dealings remain a hot topic, with reports suggesting potential departures and acquisitions as the transfer window edges closer to its conclusion.
