Manchester United have reportedly made an enquiry for ex-Chelsea star Conor Gallagher as a possible alternative to Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. The Red Devils, who have already bolstered their squad this summer with the acquisitions of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego Leon, are closing in on a deal for goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the clubs have reached a ‘total agreement’ on a £18.2 million fee, with the 23-year-old stopper expected to sign a five-year contract.
Manager Ruben Amorim, having reinforced his attacking and defensive options, now turns his attention to strengthening United’s midfield. Baleba had been earmarked as a ‘perfect’ complement for Bruno Fernandes in a double pivot role, yet after extensive discussions with Brighton, United balked at the Seagulls’ £100 million valuation. Despite Baleba’s eagerness to don the red of Manchester, the club opted against proceeding with his transfer, respecting Brighton’s financial demands with no ill feeling.
Meanwhile, their quest for an alternative has led them to Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher, who switched from Chelsea to the Spanish side for £34 million last year. The England international, valued at £45 million by Atletico, has also attracted interest from Tottenham, Newcastle, and Crystal Palace. According to CaughtOffside, Spurs are currently the front-runners in the chase, preparing a bid of approximately £35-40 million for the midfielder.
Football Espana further reports that Manchester United have initiated contact with Gallagher’s representatives regarding a potential loan deal. However, Atletico are insisting on a loan with an obligation to buy for £45 million, while United would prefer a deal without such conditions. United, nevertheless, could spring into action if the right opportunity arises.
