Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has adopted a cautious stance regarding the club’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper, as talks progress with Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens. While the Portuguese tactician is reportedly content with his current trio of shot-stoppers Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir, and veteran Tom Heaton negotiations with Lammens suggest another option could soon join the ranks.
Amorim, speaking to the press, maintained a shroud of mystery over potential squad changes. When quizzed about whether securing a new addition hinged on departures, he responded, “It’s not an idea that these guys are going to leave, to play in a different club, and then we’ll receive another player. We don’t know what is going to happen, but we’re not waiting to take out someone to get another.”
Despite his non-committal remarks, reports indicate United’s move for Lammens, a 23-year-old Belgian under consideration since December, is nearing completion, with Fabrizio Romano suggesting personal terms are close to agreement. Antwerp are reportedly seeking around £17 million for the highly-rated keeper.
The urgency for reinforcing United’s goalkeeping department became apparent last weekend when Onana was sidelined due to injury, and Bayindir’s error led to Arsenal’s decisive goal in a 1-0 defeat. Heaton, now 39, remains a dependable but aging option as third-choice.
In other Red Devils news, Amorim was candid about the status of the ‘bomb squad’ Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia who are training separately from the main squad. The manager urged these players to clarify their futures, stating, “I know it is not a good thing to have players in this situation, but it’s clear they want to play in a different club, and that is clear. So we try to arrange everything for both parts to be happy.”
Ruben Amorim also provided a brief update on team fitness ahead of the upcoming fixture: “Onana is ready to play like last week, so we will see in the game who is going to be the goalkeeper. Licha is out, Nous is out. The rest of the guys are fit.”
As the transfer window approaches its closure, United’s strategic reshaping continues unabated. While Amorim remains tight-lipped, the addition of a fifth summer signing seems increasingly imminent.
