In an unexpected twist of events at Old Trafford, Manchester United are reportedly reconsidering their stance on captain Bruno Fernandes, despite earlier speculations linking him with a lucrative summer transfer to the Saudi Pro League. Fernandes, who holds a significant amount of influence despite his shift from a more attacking role, has been attracting attention from several clubs, particularly Al-Hilal, who appear eager to bolster their squad ahead of the Club World Cup.
The Red Devils, fresh from a dismal 2024/25 campaign culminating in a disappointing 15th place finish without silverware, relied heavily on Fernandes’ consistent performances amid the turmoil. Although his potential departure lingered over the summer, Fernandes ultimately chose to remain in Manchester for the current season. Despite this, rumours of a January exit continue to swirl, with Middle Eastern clubs reportedly on high alert.
According to a report from Football Insider, United may now be inclined towards ‘sanctioning his move’ to Saudi Arabia. Former chief scout Mick Brown, tapping into his extensive network within the industry, suggested that United could be contemplating cashing in should an appropriate offer come along. Brown reflected, “If an offer of around £100 million is tabled, they might consider it’s time to reinvest in the squad.”
With United’s ambitions hanging in the balance, performance in the ongoing season could well dictate Fernandes’ future. A return to European competition might detain the Portuguese playmaker, but failure would leave the door open for his departure as United explore fresh avenues.
In tandem with Fernandes’ saga, team-mate Joshua Zirkzee is also rumoured to be on the verge of a January exit. Despite the decision to retain Zirkzee and sell Rasmus Hojlund last summer, limited opportunities have plagued his campaign thus far. Linked predominantly to West Ham, as well as Italian sides Juventus and Como, Zirkzee may soon find a new home if the interest crystalises into a formal offer.
As the transfer window draws closer, United fans watch with bated breath, uncertain of how these pivotal months will reshape their beloved club.
