Manchester City have reportedly engaged in discussions with PSG regarding the potential acquisition of Gianluigi Donnarumma, as they attempt to edge out city rivals Manchester United for the Italian’s signature. The 26-year-old goalkeeper, who has spent the summer being linked to Manchester, had until now been primarily associated with a move to Old Trafford.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that City have approached the Parisians with the intent to bring Donnarumma to the Etihad Stadium. Although the Italian custodian lifted the Champions League trophy with PSG last summer, his future in Paris appears uncertain. The French giants are said to be open to letting him go amid the final year of his contract, and he was conspicuously absent from the squad for the UEFA Super Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
Romano indicates that PSG’s asking price stands at €50 million, a fee City find excessive unless Ederson departs. Despite a successful eight-year spell, the Brazilian’s involvement diminished last season, leading to speculation about his departure. With City recently splashing £31 million on James Trafford following his impressive spell at Burnley, Ederson’s future appears uncertain. Reports have suggested a potential return to Brazil for Ederson, but Romano has mentioned that Galatasaray have expressed interest through a direct approach for the 31-year-old.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have reportedly shown no interest in Donnarumma, who seems set on leaving PSG either this summer or next year as a free agent, according to Romano. While Pep Guardiola initially seemed committed to keeping Ederson and Stefan Ortega, the acquisition of Trafford hints at a potential reshuffling of City’s goalkeeping hierarchy.
Should Donnarumma make the move to East Manchester, United could face a dilemma, as some within the club remain unconvinced about Andre Onana’s suitability. A summer assertion suggested Ruben Amorim was reluctant to allocate significant funds for a goalkeeper, opting to bolster other areas of the squad, thereby quelling immediate interest in Donnarumma despite his willingness to join United.
