Newcastle United are poised to challenge Tottenham Hotspur in the race for French striker Evann Guessand, as talks with his current club Nice appear to have stalled.
The summer transfer window has been far from smooth sailing for the Magpies. Following the departure of sporting director Paul Mitchell in May, there’s been mounting speculation around Alexander Isak’s future at the club. Despite these setbacks, Newcastle remain determined to strengthen their attacking options.
The Tyneside club welcomed Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for a nominal fee, but have seen other targets slip through their grasp. Attempts to sign Bryan Mbeumo were thwarted by Manchester United, Joao Pedro opted for Chelsea, and Liam Delap also chose Stamford Bridge over Newcastle. Meanwhile, a move for Hugo Ekitike fell through when Liverpool entered the fray, while Brentford’s rising valuation put Yoane Wissa out of reach.
With Isak still in their ranks, Newcastle could consider themselves well-equipped for the new season. However, fresh reports from SportWitness via AfricaFoot indicate that they’ve now set their sights on rivaling Tottenham for Guessand.
Despite Spurs’ long-standing interest in the 24-year-old, negotiations with OGC Nice have hit a snag, opening the door for other suitors such as Villarreal and Fenerbahce.
Fenerbahce have reportedly tabled a £26 million bid but Guessand is believed to favour a Premier League move. Newcastle have seized on this uncertainty, making contact with the player’s representatives as they look to outmanoeuvre Tottenham’s indecisiveness.
Guessand, who is comfortable across the front line or as a second striker, offers a versatile option that could strategically bolster Eddie Howe’s squad. Standing at 6ft 2in and coming off a productive season with 13 goals and ten assists, Guessand’s allure is undeniable.
His contract, which runs until 2028, and comparatively modest wages at Nice mean personal terms are unlikely to pose a hurdle. While Fenerbahce, Villarreal, and Juventus remain in the running, the prospect of Premier League football could sway Guessand towards either Newcastle or Tottenham.
With the Magpies making decisive moves for Guessand, this transfer saga is far from over and could culminate with a Premier League twist.
