Liverpool have reportedly moved closer to securing the signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United this summer. The Swedish forward, who has been a prime target for the Reds, is believed to prefer a switch to Anfield despite lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia after signalling his desire to leave St James’ Park.
Having splashed out approximately £260 million on new talent this transfer window, Liverpool have welcomed the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong as notable additions to their squad. Despite their spending spree, the Merseyside club still seems intent on further augmenting their ranks, with potential player sales, including Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott, and Federico Chiesa, set to free up additional funds. This follows the high-profile departures of Luis Diaz and Jarell Quansah for £60.5 million and £30 million respectively.
Fabrizio Romano recently disclosed on DAZN Football that Liverpool’s pursuit of Isak could be deemed 60 per cent complete, though he cautioned there remains significant ground to cover before the move materialises. Romano stated, “Liverpool are very keen to finalise this agreement. They initiated contact with Newcastle two weeks back and are ready to make a Premier League record bid for the 25-year-old, pending Newcastle’s approval.”
In further developments, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reported that Liverpool had reached a verbal accord with Isak for a six-year contract, aligning his salary with that of Ekitike, who earns £200,000 weekly after his move from Eintracht Frankfurt. Plettenberg’s update on social media suggested that Isak is eager to finalise the deal within the current transfer window, adding pressure on Newcastle to negotiate.
Nevertheless, Romano recently reiterated that Liverpool are still waiting on Newcastle to “open doors” to the transfer. His insights suggest that although Isak’s preferred destination is Liverpool and contractual terms are set, the Magpies are yet to entertain a formal offer. Meanwhile, Manchester United and Newcastle remain actively engaged in discussions concerning Benjamin Šeško, with the player’s future still undecided.
As the transfer window continues to unfold, all eyes remain on Anfield to see if Liverpool will indeed succeed in bringing Alexander Isak into their ranks.
