Liverpool appear to be on the brink of securing their inaugural signing for the year 2026, following Chelsea’s withdrawal from the race. With reports suggesting the Reds are set to finalise a deal for Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordonez, valued at approximately £43 million, the acquisition could be concluded within days.
Having concluded a spectacular summer transfer window with over £400 million spent on renewing the squad post their 20th Premier League triumph, Liverpool’s fortunes have waned this season. Head coach Arne Slot was afforded significant funds to reshape the squad, investing heavily in Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike. However, the sweeping changes have not translated into on-field success, with Liverpool slipping out of title contention before the close of the year.
Nonetheless, recent adjustments by Slot have seen a resurgence in performances, although the need for further reinforcements remains apparent, particularly in the centre-back position. This was underscored by the failure to secure Marc Guehi during the summer, leaving a notable void in defence.
Reports from earlier this week indicated Liverpool’s status as front-runners to sign 21-year-old Ecuador international Ordonez. The British media now confirms the Reds’ imminent acquisition of Ordonez for a fee initially around £35 million, potentially rising due to add-ons, following Chelsea’s decision to end their pursuit.
Liverpool’s defensive concerns have been highlighted by former player Jason McAteer, who argued the club’s summer focus should have been on augmenting the backline rather than splashing £120 million on Isak, following the successful signing of Ekitike. McAteer underlines that a strengthened defence was crucial, citing Joe Gomez’s recurring injury issues and the availability of Guehi, who could have been a valuable addition considering his upcoming free agent status.
The anticipated arrival of Ordonez could mark a significant step in Liverpool’s efforts to solidify their defensive framework as they seek to claw back into contention in domestic and European competitions.
Liverpool fans will be eager to see how these strategic moves unfold as the January window progresses.
