Liverpool have reportedly devised a cunning plan to secure the services of Athletic Bilbao’s winger, Nico Williams, in a bid to bolster Arne Slot’s attacking options. Despite beginning the new season with an impressive five victories from their initial Premier League matches following their league triumph last season, Liverpool experienced a challenging week prior to the international break, enduring defeats at the hands of Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, and Chelsea.
These two Premier League losses allowed Arsenal to erase a five-point deficit, leaving them a point clear at the top of the table above Slot’s men. While criticism has been directed at various facets of the team, particularly in midfield and defence, injuries to Alisson and selection dilemmas upfront have also posed challenges.
Despite an abundance of attacking options, Liverpool are reportedly contemplating a move for Athletic Bilbao’s star player, Nico Williams, before the 2026 World Cup. The Spanish international opted to remain at Bilbao, penning a new contract over the summer despite significant interest from top clubs across Europe.
Liverpool believes Williams would seamlessly integrate into their offensive revival strategy, although they are not inclined to meet the €90 million release clause. Spanish reports suggest the Reds are looking to negotiate a deal in the region of €75m (£65m), a sum they hope will appeal to Athletic Bilbao amid ongoing concerns about the player’s physical reliability. Sources indicate that internal discussions at Bilbao are considering whether to retain their prized asset despite his inconsistencies or capitalise on his market value before potential international acclaim elevates it further.
Liverpool aspire to pre-empt their competition, as scouts fear Williams’ valuation could surge if he cements his position within the national team.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have been linked with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, revered by clubs domestically and abroad. However, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy suggests the Reds may not need to secure the England international’s signature.
In conversation with BetWright, Murphy remarked, “I like him. He’s a talented footballer, and it’s understandable that clubs are interested in him. But Liverpool’s current squad depth, with McAllister, Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Szoboszlai, and Endo, seems well-covered in midfield.”
Murphy continues, “Liverpool’s major focus should be finding a centre back. That’s the area prompting concern amongst fans. Although no fan would be displeased with Wharton joining, it might not be Liverpool’s immediate priority.”
