Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has categorically ruled out Arsenal’s chances of clinching the Premier League title, instead touting a two-horse race between Liverpool and his former club, Chelsea. Arsenal’s recent 1-0 loss to reigning champions Liverpool, prior to the international break, left many fans disappointed with Mikel Arteta’s tactics against Arne Slot’s skilful squad.
Despite being only three points adrift of Liverpool, who are enjoying a flawless start with three wins from three, the Gunners find themselves just behind Chelsea in the standings, with the London side boasting a superior point tally.
Liverpool’s formidable start has been bolstered by strategic signings including Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Jeremie Frimpong, making them many pundits’ favourites to retain the Premier League crown. Though Arsenal’s transfer activity has also been praiseworthy—welcoming talents like Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyokeres, and Martin Zubimendi—Mikel remains sceptical about their title credentials for this campaign.
Ahead of Arsenal’s clash against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Mikel shared his thoughts on The Obi One Podcast, saying, “The club’s hierarchy has once again provided substantial backing to Arteta. They possess one of the strongest squads in England, alongside Liverpool. The depth is remarkable, with two quality players per position.”
Mikel expressed confidence that the expectations are high for Arteta, who has openly acknowledged the necessity of either a Premier League or Champions League triumph. “Winning the League Cup or FA Cup is not going to suffice. There is a belief within the club that this season is their season,” he noted.
However, Mikel has placed his bet on a Liverpool and Chelsea face-off for the title. Reflecting on Chelsea’s prospects, he commented, “It’s between Liverpool and Chelsea; we stand a good chance. If there’s a squad capable of challenging Liverpool, it’s Chelsea, especially with the way we play from the back.”
Heaped praise on the work of Enzo Maresca, Mikel added, “Regardless of the pressing, our lads have the courage and conviction to play out from the back. We’re in prime position to potentially topple this Liverpool side and be in the mix at the season’s end. It’s undoubtedly a Liverpool-Chelsea battle for the Premier League crown.”
