Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford is reportedly favouring a summer transfer to Aston Villa over Newcastle United, say sources.
Trafford, who joined the Citizens for £27 million from Burnley last summer following their promotion from the Championship, has found opportunities limited. The former England Under-21 international has made just 11 appearances in all competitions this season, with a mere three in the Premier League, largely due to the unexpected signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has become City’s first-choice keeper.
Reflecting on Donnarumma’s arrival, Trafford remarked, “I didn’t expect the situation to happen, but it happened, so just get on with it. It’s happened so I work very hard every day and see what happens, give it my best shot.”
Despite his limited playing time, there is keen interest from Premier League clubs, with Aston Villa and Newcastle reportedly considering a move. Sources close to Trafford reveal that he is prioritising a switch to Aston Villa, potentially to work under manager Unai Emery, who could also offer Champions League football.
In discussing his future, Trafford confirmed that Pep Guardiola had not guaranteed him the number one spot this season. “No, it wasn’t that, but it [the plan] wasn’t what happened. It is what it is. It’s football, it is what it is, you’ve got to keep grafting every day and the games that come, play as hard as you can.”
Despite signing a five-year contract last year, Trafford hasn’t ruled out a summer departure. “Let’s take it a day at a time and try and work as hard as I can and whatever happens, happens,” he added.
Trafford’s future may also be influenced by his recent call-up by England manager Thomas Tuchel ahead of the World Cup. “I play as well as I can and train every day very hard and it’s just down to me,” said Trafford, emphasising his commitment to improving his game.
As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on Trafford to see if a move materialises, with Villa currently leading the race for his signature.
