Renowned Swedish forward, Alexander Isak, has shed light on his tumultuous exit from Newcastle United and his challenging start at Liverpool. Having made a high-profile switch to Anfield for a staggering £125 million this past summer, Isak forced the move by downing tools at St James’ Park. His actions included refusing to train with Newcastle, even as they continued to cover his wages, which left many Magpies fans disgruntled.
However, life at Liverpool hasn’t been the fairy tale he might have envisioned. The Reds, who were recently crowned champions, now find themselves languishing in mid-table. Isak has managed to find the back of the net only once in seven league outings.
In a candid sit-down with Sky Sports, Isak admitted: “It’s been a tough initiation, for me individually and for the team collectively. Our results haven’t been up to scratch, and I certainly have higher expectations for myself. That said, I’m maintaining a positive mindset. We have a fantastic group here, and we’re all focused on improving.”
He continued, “I always set high standards for myself, whether I’m performing well or not, so this is no different. I’m committed to working hard and hoping to turn things around for both myself and the club.”
When probed about his fitness levels since joining Liverpool, Isak confessed, “I can’t say I’ve felt at my peak physically since arriving. But those aren’t the criteria by which I judge my performances. Once I’m on the pitch, it’s down to me to deliver.”
Reflecting on his controversial Newcastle departure, Isak remarked, “I don’t linger on it. That’s in the past. My attention is firmly on the here and now.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, concedes that the team is yet to fully align with Isak’s playing style. “Our focus has been on tightening up defensively, which unfortunately means fewer chances for our number nine,” Slot revealed. “But we recognize the need to involve him more in attacking moves, and it’s an area we’re actively working on.”
As Isak continues to find his footing at Anfield, Liverpool fans will be hoping to soon see the dazzling displays that made him such a sought-after prospect.
