Tottenham Hotspur icon Glenn Hoddle has expressed concerns over the future of the club’s standout defender, suggesting that he may not commit to a new contract amid potential interest from Premier League giants Manchester City and Liverpool.
Micky van de Ven, the Dutch centre-back who has dazzled since his arrival from Wolfsburg in 2023, has emerged as Tottenham’s defensive stalwart this season. Known for his pace on the backline, Van de Ven has also been prolific going forward, netting six goals including three in the Premier League and two crucial strikes in the Champions League.
Despite being tied to a contract that extends to 2029, Hoddle doubts the defender will sign an extension. Speaking to Capital Football, he remarked: “Van de Ven is currently on a lengthy contract. They’re hoping to secure him on an extended deal, but I don’t think he will commit to that.”
Hoddle lauded Van de Ven as Tottenham’s only “world-class” player, capable of slotting into top teams such as Manchester City, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain. He added, “When I say world-class, I mean he could walk into any team. Everyone would want him because he’s that good.”
One notable European powerhouse Hoddle didn’t mention was Real Madrid, who have been linked with the defender in recent times.
Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood echoed the sentiment, arguing it would be a monumental challenge for the North London club to retain Van de Ven should he maintain his current form and fitness. “If he stays fit, it’s virtually impossible for Tottenham to hold onto him. He’s top drawer, the real deal. But injuries remain a concern,” Sherwood highlighted.
Spurs are eager to secure Van de Ven’s future at the club, recognising his significance to the team. However, if Hoddle’s predictions prove accurate and a renewal isn’t agreed upon, Tottenham might have to consider lucrative offers before the player’s contract expires in 2029, turning their attention to potential replacements.
