Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has lavished praise on two current United players following their stunning 2-1 triumph over Liverpool at Anfield. The legendary defender believes new summer recruit, Matheus Cunha, exhibited glimpses of becoming an “unplayable” force, while he anticipates Senne Lammens could ascend to become the world’s top goalkeeper.
In an intense matchup on Sunday, Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring early for United, who managed to fend off numerous Liverpool advances. A late equaliser from Cody Gakpo was nullified by Harry Maguire’s decisive header, securing the win for manager Ruben Amorim’s side and narrowing the gap to just two points behind Liverpool in the Premier League standings.
Ferdinand, speaking on his YouTube broadcast, singled out Cunha for his impactful performance: “I thought Matheus Cunha was magnificent, especially in the second half when we needed someone to provide us time and relief,” he noted. “Cunha’s on-pitch aura and flair make him a mesmerising player; he’s bound to become almost unplayable at times.”
The former England centre-back also highlighted the efforts of Bryan Mbeumo and goalkeeper Senne Lammens, praising Mbeumo for his persistent positional play and Lammens for his assured presence between the posts: “Mbeumo’s persistence is commendable—he continuously finds himself in vital positions, which will eventually bring fortune, as it did today,” Ferdinand commented.
Ferdinand further commended Lammens, describing his performance as “dependable”. He elaborated: “Despite only making two appearances, Lammens pulled off crucial saves with composure. His safe hands and assertive nature instil confidence in the back-line.”
Former Club Brugge manager Hayk Milkon echoed Ferdinand’s sentiments about Lammens, expressing belief in the Belgian’s potential to reach the pinnacle of his profession. “Senne has all it takes to be the best in the world,” Milkon told the Manchester Evening News. “His talent was evident, and I was unsurprised when United came calling. He’s poised to have a significant career in England, reestablishing Manchester United as a dominant force.”
Both Ferdinand and Milkon’s endorsements paint a promising picture for Manchester United’s future, with emerging talents like Cunha and Lammens poised to play pivotal roles in the club’s resurgence.
