Chelsea are anxiously awaiting news on the extent of Cole Palmer’s groin injury after the 22-year-old was sidelined during the warm-up before their emphatic 5-1 triumph over West Ham United on Friday evening.
Palmer, initially slated to start at the London Stadium, experienced discomfort as the team prepared for the match, resulting in Estevao Willian stepping in at the last moment. Joao Pedro took over the No.10 position in Palmer’s absence, while the latter watched from the bench in east London.
Although the Blues managed to secure a dominant victory without Palmer’s involvement, the potential long-term absence of their new No.10 could spell trouble for Chelsea’s strategic plans. Of particular concern is the potential impact on their ongoing pursuit of Xavi Simons. Negotiations with RB Leipzig have been progressing for over a month, with the West London club keen to finalise the sale of Christopher Nkunku before advancing on Simons.
Interestingly, talks regarding Nkunku’s transfer have also been conducted independently between Leipzig and Chelsea in recent weeks. The potential shortage of No.10 options becomes a pressing issue if Palmer faces an extended period on the sidelines.
Joao Pedro’s adaptation to a deeper role on Friday night highlights the scarcity of options in Chelsea’s attacking lineup, with Liam Delap currently the sole No.9 available to manager Enzo Maresca.
