In a move that underscores Chelsea’s unwavering resolve, the London giants have reportedly turned down a massive £149m offer from their Premier League adversaries, Manchester City, for their rising star Cole Palmer, according to sources.
The saga took root when Manchester City parted ways with Palmer in 2023, selling him to Chelsea for a modest £40m amidst Pep Guardiola’s crowded attacking lineup. However, Palmer has since flourished in the Premier League, amassing an impressive tally of 37 goals and 19 assists across 70 appearances and earning 12 caps for the England national team.
The Citizens, perhaps recognising a missed opportunity, are keen to reacquire Palmer and have laid down a staggering bid in their pursuit, as per the Spanish publication, Fichajes. Nevertheless, Chelsea have decisively ‘rejected an offer exceeding 170 million euros (£149m)’.
The Blues, seemingly intent on demonstrating their competitiveness against the world’s elite clubs, have set an astronomical price tag of £250m for Palmer, a sum that would obliterate the current world transfer record held by Neymar’s €222m move to Paris Saint-Germain back in 2017.
Chelsea’s resolve isn’t merely a ploy to fend off prospective buyers. It also signals their ambition to retain key personnel and establish their standing amongst the elite. Their determination is echoed by Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, who hailed Palmer as potentially the best player in the world. “What he does is magic,” Sanchez asserted following Palmer’s influential performance in the Club World Cup.
Conversely, Chelsea’s former midfield stalwart Claude Makelele believes Palmer has room for improvement, urging the talented forward to be more “selfish” in front of goal while integrating his teammates better into play. Makelele has every faith that under the guidance of national and club coaches, Palmer will unlock his full potential, akin to an Arjen Robben-esque ability to change games single-handedly.
The transfer saga may unravel further, but as it stands, Chelsea’s message is clear: Cole Palmer is the linchpin of their ambitions, and they’re prepared to keep him at all costs.
