Chelsea have ostensibly initiated contact with the agent of a Premier League standout, signifying their interest in a signing that some might argue they could do without. The Blues have been in fine fettle, riding high after securing fourth place in the league last term. Presently, they occupy third spot on the table while trailing second-placed Manchester City by a modest two points. Maintaining their current run of form could set Chelsea up for a promising campaign finale.
In a bid to bolster their ranks for the 2026 season, reports from Caught Offside indicate that the Stamford Bridge club has reached out to intermediaries about Crystal Palace’s Daniel Munoz. The Colombian full-back, who operates primarily on the right side, has piqued interest from illustrious clubs such as Barcelona and Manchester City, having netted twice and provided two assists for the Eagles this term.
Speculation suggests Munoz could be procured for as little as €30 million (£26.5 million), although Palace’s valuation is purported to exceed £25 million. Chelsea might be contemplating a bid as early as January, cognisant of Reece James’ previous injury woes. Nevertheless, the stable of right-backs currently at Graham Potter’s disposal raises questions about the necessity of such an acquisition.
Besides James who has clocked 874 minutes this term Chelsea boast the services of Malo Gusto and Josh Acheampong. Both have seen playing time, with Gusto occasionally being deployed in midfield and Acheampong at centre-back, underscoring the depth available to Chelsea.
Reports purport that Chelsea could face an excess of options in the right-back department, potentially limiting playing time for each. While a new signing could provide cover in the unfortunate event of an injury to James or Gusto, the current lineup offers adequate contingency through their versatility.
Munoz might himself reflect on Chelsea’s defensive depth and opt to remain at Selhurst Park, where he enjoys regular minutes, having missed just three full matches this season.
It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will proceed with their pursuit of the Palace man, or decide such a move would simply congest an already well-stocked position.
