Bayern Munich are reportedly considering a swoop for Manchester United’s promising talent, Kobbie Mainoo, in the upcoming January transfer window. The Bavarian club, known for nurturing young talent, sees a potential opportunity to secure Mainoo’s services as the player grows increasingly discontented with his playing time at Old Trafford.
Under the stewardship of Ruben Amorim, Manchester United have had a mixed season, currently sitting sixth in the Premier League following their commanding 4-1 victory against Wolves. Despite being just a point shy of the top four, United’s inconsistent form has left them only three points clear of 12th place in a tightly contested league campaign. Amorim, supported by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS with a hefty £200m summer investment, addressed the squad’s attacking frailties, but the midfield remains an area of concern. This deficiency could see United delve into the market once again this January, possibly paving the way for Mainoo’s departure.
Amorim previously positioned Mainoo as a competitor to captain Bruno Fernandes for a starting role, yet the talented midfielder has yet to mark a Premier League start this term. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Mainoo is reportedly seeking regular first-team football. Despite efforts by director of football, Jason Wilcox, to retain him in the summer, rumours now suggest the youngster wishes to move on.
Football pundit Richard Keys commented on the situation, attributing Mainoo’s lack of game time to Amorim’s concerns over his mobility, a claim that Keys finds questionable given the selection of veteran Casemiro.
Spanish outlet Fichajes highlights Bayern Munich as frontrunners for Mainoo, considering the German club’s track record with young prospects. With a valuation around £80m, Bayern might represent an appealing destination, potentially offering the consistency and growth Mainoo seeks.
Meanwhile, Diego Leon, another of United’s emerging stars, has been linked with a loan move. However, his agent, Renato Bittar, maintains that the 19-year-old’s current trajectory at Old Trafford is part of their strategic development plan, cautioning against a mid-season disruption to his progress with the Under-21s.
