Aston Villa is reportedly considering a move to bring former striker Tammy Abraham back to the club as they seek to provide ‘support and competition’ for current first-choice forward, Ollie Watkins.
In recent months, the Villans have demonstrated a remarkable turnaround following a sluggish start to the campaign, embarking on an impressive 11-match winning streak across various competitions. They have remained unbeaten in their last three outings since a narrow defeat to Arsenal in late December.
Watkins, a key figure for the Midlands club and an England international, has recently rediscovered his scoring touch. After a challenging beginning where he netted just once in 13 league appearances, Watkins found the back of the net twice in match 14 and has subsequently amassed six goals and an assist over a seven-game period.
Whilst Watkins has enjoyed a resurgence, Villa are keen to strengthen their attacking options. Donyell Malen and Evann Guessand haven’t shown consistent form, leading Villa to explore the acquisition of a ‘specialist striker’ to complement Watkins, according to a report from The Telegraph.
The 28-year-old Abraham, currently on loan at Turkish side Besiktas, is a prime target. Abraham previously impressed during a loan spell at Villa in the 2018/19 Championship season, bagging 25 league goals and an additional one in the successful playoff run. Following stints at Roma and AC Milan, he has hit 12 goals in 24 appearances for Besiktas this term—a marked improvement from his prior season in Milan, where he netted merely 10 times.
While there are concerns about whether Abraham can replicate his scoring prowess in the Premier League, under the guidance of Unai Emery, fans are optimistic. However, any potential transfer might face complications, as Abraham is set to join Besiktas permanently for £11.2 million in the summer, contingent on specific conditions being met. Despite this, Villa remains vigilant in their pursuit.
In addition, Villa are reportedly interested in acquiring Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher and are contemplating a resolution regarding Harvey Elliott. Currently, Elliott is on loan at Villa, but the club is opting not to play him to avoid activating a clause requiring a permanent £35 million transfer after ten appearances.
Thus far, Aston Villa has not shied away from ambitious plans this transfer window as they look to sustain their upward trajectory in the Premier League.
Aston Villa continues its dynamic quest in the transfer market to bolster their squad, and fans await further developments eagerly.
