Mikel Arteta, the head coach of Arsenal, has recently shared insights into Viktor Gyokeres’ form and explained his decision to repeatedly overlook Eberechi Eze in Arsenal’s lineup. Gyokeres, who was signed from Sporting Lisbon for a cool £64 million in the summer, was seen as a quick fix for Arsenal’s attacking woes. However, he’s come under scrutiny having netted just seven goals in 20 appearances, with five in 15 Premier League matches.
The Swedish forward, originally picked over Benjamin Sesko, has struggled to find his footing at the Emirates, leading to speculation that teammates Gabriel Jesus or Kai Havertz might soon take his place. Ahead of Friday night’s clash against AFC Bournemouth, Arteta issued a challenge to Gyokeres, revealing the missing link in his performances thus far.
“He is going to continue to have a lot of noise around him for the next five years,” Arteta told Sky Sports. “As soon as you sign as an Arsenal No 9 with his history, the expectation is always high. That’s just part and parcel of wearing the shirt. He knew that from day one, and it’s what we planned for; I see him training diligently every day, eager for success.”
Arteta was keen to point out that the striker is involved in other aspects of the game, adding, “The missing element at the moment is more goals, but he’s executing other facets of his role admirably. With time, I’m confident it will all come together.”
The Gunners’ boss also suggested that robust competition for attacking spots could benefit Gyokeres. “That’s part of the plan—to foster healthy competition in the team. When Jesus scored, seeing Kai and Viktor celebrate together was special. Their camaraderie is uplifting; they genuinely support one another, which is joyous for a manager to witness.”
On the topic of Eberechi Eze, Arteta clarified his reasoning for the tactical omissions. “I have discussions with every player about their form and feelings. Eze has clocked more minutes than he ever has at this stage in a season. With him featuring in around 22 of our 28 matches, we believe he’s tracking well with his development.”
Arsenal’s crowded attacking lineup and strategic planning continue to present challenges and opportunities as the season progresses, with Arteta carefully managing player development and squad dynamics.
