Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot, is reportedly prepared to part ways with a player seemingly fated for departure, due to three key reasons. The atmosphere at Anfield has been one of transformation in recent months, with Slot and the club’s ownership, Fenway Sports Group, orchestrating a squad rebuild following last season’s Premier League victory.
After guiding Liverpool to an unexpected triumph for their 20th Premier League title during the 2024/25 season, Dutchman Slot was endowed with significant financial backing over the summer, ensuring Liverpool were Europe’s top spenders. While Federico Chiesa was the solitary acquisition last season, this summer presented a divergent narrative. Liverpool shattered the British transfer record twice, bringing in talents such as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, alongside significant investments in Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez.
These strategic moves were anticipated to herald a period of Premier League dominance for Liverpool, although the results have been less than favourable. Despite a promising start characterised by late goals and individual brilliance securing them initial victories, Liverpool’s fortunes faltered, resulting in a string of defeats against Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, Chelsea, and Manchester United.
Nonetheless, Liverpool exhibited potential by securing a 5-1 triumph against Eintracht Frankfurt in the midweek Champions League clash, though this performance would have little impact unless they secured a crucial Premier League win against Brentford on Saturday night. As the clash approaches, the majority of Liverpool’s roster has underperformed—with Chiesa as a notable exception, managing to keep a respectable form.
Despite joining Liverpool in the summer of 2024, Federico Chiesa has only seen limited action, yet his sporadic appearances channeled commendable performances, prompting calls for increased match involvement. However, Spanish outlet Fichajes reports that Slot appears set to ‘discard’ Chiesa, pointing towards an imminent exit.
