Andre Onana committed another costly mistake as Cameroon fell to a 1-0 defeat against Cape Verde in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.
The Manchester United goalkeeper has struggled since arriving from Inter Milan in a £47m deal in the summer of 2023. Errors have marked his time under Erik ten Hag and more recently Ruben Amorim, with his calamitous display in the FA Cup defeat at Grimsby Town last month seemingly his final outing for United.
Onana is set to leave Old Trafford for a loan move to Trabzonspor. The Turkish club have agreed terms with the 29 year old who will travel from Africa to Turkey on Thursday. He is expected to double his wages with the Super Lig side though United will not receive a loan fee and no option to buy has been included.
His latest mistake came in Praia as Cameroon met Cape Verde in a top of the group qualifier. With the match goalless in the 53rd minute Cape Verde forward Rocha Livramento broke through midfield and advanced into the penalty area. Onana inexplicably chose to remain on his line before diving out of the path of the striker’s finish which secured a historic victory for the hosts and sealed their first ever place at a World Cup finals.
The defeat leaves Cameroon in second and likely facing a play off route if they are to reach North America next summer. Onana’s confidence is low and his error only reinforced concerns about his form since leaving Inter.
United’s decision to sanction his departure follows the £21.7m signing of Senne Lammens from Antwerp last week. Despite initial claims from both the club and the player that he would remain, Onana was informed that he could pursue a move. Talks with Trabzonspor accelerated after their goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir agreed a transfer to Galatasaray and the Turkish side moved quickly to secure the Cameroonian.
The deal is expected to be confirmed before the close of the Turkish transfer window on Friday.
