Manchester United are deemed “very unlikely” to permit the departures of Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo come January, according to insights from the club’s former chief scout. The Red Devils have recently found their footing in the Premier League, clinching ten points from their last four encounters, which includes three victories and a draw. Consequently, this upturn has eased the pressure on manager Ruben Amorim as the January transfer window approaches.
With a midfielder apparently on United’s wish list, the club is expected to back Amorim with new signings. However, speculation surrounds the futures of Mainoo and Zirkzee, both of whom are eager to secure regular football before the 2026 World Cup. Despite their limited starting opportunities this season, former United chief scout Mick Brown, who continues to maintain close ties with Old Trafford, emphasises the club’s desire to retain both players.
Brown disclosed to Football Insider: “Ruben Amorim is reluctant to lose players mid-season. It’s United’s doing, particularly concerning how Mainoo’s been managed since the summer. He was outstanding last season, yet is hardly featured now, sparking interest from other clubs. Despite this, I don’t foresee them letting him go. He’s vital for rotation, even if he’s not starting. The same strategy applies to Zirkzee. Although sidelined, he’s an asset to have in the squad.
“Injuries can occur, and these are exactly the sorts of players you’d want to call upon. Hence, it’s improbable that either will depart in January, along with several others on the squad’s fringes.”
In other club-related developments, United have been linked with a handful of forwards, given Benjamin Sesko’s struggles to adapt to the English top flight. While speculations continue, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has dismissed any likelihood of signing Real Madrid’s Endrick, citing the youngster’s preference for guaranteed playing time over a move to Manchester.
