Italian football powerhouses AC Milan have set their sights on Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez as their preferred choice to bolster their attacking line-up. Núñez’s future at Anfield appears uncertain following Liverpool’s acquisition of Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for a reported £69 million.
The Uruguayan forward has had a challenging spell with the Reds, netting 25 times in 95 Premier League outings. His transfer from Benfica in June 2022 saw Liverpool fork out an initial £64 million, a figure potentially rising to £84 million with add-ons, which was nearly a club record prior to the signing of Florian Wirtz for £100 million.
In July, it emerged that the Premier League champions are seeking £70 million for Núñez, a valuation that few clubs have shown willingness to meet. Despite initial links with Napoli, who later opted for the more affordable Lorenzo Lucca from Udinese, it’s Juventus and clubs from Saudi Arabia that have been more frequently connected with a move for the striker.
However, recent reports indicate AC Milan are now keenly interested in acquiring Núñez’s services. According to noted Italian transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio, Milan regard Núñez as their top target for the forward line and are currently endeavouring to secure his signature. Yet, Di Marzio notes that the negotiation process remains fraught with difficulties. Manchester United’s Rasmus Højlund, Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic, and Stade Rennes’ Arnaud Kalimuendo are also potential options on Milan’s radar.
While Saudi outfit Al Hilal have shown interest, dialogues between Milan and Núñez have already taken place, with the Saudi Pro League champions yet to table a concrete offer.
This development follows Liverpool’s sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich for £65 million, a move that facilitated their audacious £110 million opening bid for Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, which the Magpies have rebuffed. Newcastle are reportedly steadfast in their valuation, only ready to enter discussions around a £150 million deal. Isak impressed last season, tallying 23 goals in 34 Premier League matches.
