Brentford’s frontman Yoane Wissa has reportedly exited the club’s pre-season training camp, in the midst of swirling rumours about his immediate future, as Newcastle United ramp up efforts to secure his services.
The West London side finds itself on the brink of losing both of its star attackers in quick succession. Bryan Mbeumo has completed a high-profile move to Manchester United, commanding a fee in excess of £70 million following his impressive contribution of 28 goals in the Premier League last season. Yoane Wissa, it seems, may not be far behind him, with strong interest emanating from Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur, and Nottingham Forest.
According to the BBC, the Magpies have significantly increased their bid to capture Wissa within the last 48 hours. Furthermore, significant developments have surfaced at Brentford itself. The report details that Wissa has departed the Bees’ pre-season camp in Portugal, returning to London for discussions with Phil Giles, Brentford’s director of football. These talks come amidst reports that the 29-year-old forward has been left ‘unsettled’ by ongoing transfer speculation.
It is expected that the discussions will be crucial in determining Wissa’s path forward, potentially clarifying Brentford’s stance regarding a sale. The meeting is described as ‘pivotal towards resolving Wissa’s future’. Should the striker remain with the club, he is anticipated to rejoin the squad once they return to London. Nonetheless, with his contract expiring in just a year and a market valuation around the £40 million mark, Brentford may be inclined to consider a sale.
TEAMtalk has previously noted Newcastle’s strong interest in Wissa, with current reports indicating the player himself may be eager for a new challenge.
The decision on Wissa’s future club remains open. However, there is speculation the striker could prefer a reunion with former Brentford manager Thomas Frank at Tottenham. During his tenure under Frank, Wissa made 149 appearances, scoring 49 goals and providing 13 assists, a tally only bettered by Ivan Toney and Mbeumo.
Last season saw Wissa hit peak form, notching up 19 goals and laying on a further five assists across the Premier League—a personal best across four seasons in England’s top flight. His form under Frank was undeniably impressive, suggesting he is ready for another ‘big move’.
