Manchester United, guided by Ruben Amorim, have a busy summer ahead as they continue their pursuit in fortifying the squad. The Red Devils’ transfer saga this off-season sees them zeroing in on three central midfielders, deemed their ‘next priority’ should Bryan Mbeumo’s transfer saga reach a successful conclusion.
United had earlier activated Matheus Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause to secure his services from Wolves, alongside Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno for £3.3 million. However, progress in the transfer market has hit a standstill as efforts are concentrated on acquiring Mbeumo from Brentford.
The club’s overtures have thus far been rebuffed, with Brentford rejecting United’s two bids, the latest standing at £62.5 million, below the £65 million-plus valuation. Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided ongoing updates, emphasizing United’s relentless negotiations with the Bees.
Romano conveyed, “Manchester United are all-in for Bryan Mbeumo. Conversations persist fervently, a testament to their determination to see him in Red. Dialogue continues as they aim to broker a deal allowing Mbeumo to make the move to Old Trafford.”
Amidst understandable fan anxiety, The Independent’s Miguel Delaney outlined United’s contingency plans post-Mbeumo acquisition, presuming player sales as crucial to facilitating further acquisitions. Delaney highlighted interests surrounding Sporting’s Martin Hjulmand, Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha, and Palmeiras’ Richard Rios, with caveats surrounding potential departures to balance their squad.
Intriguingly, Bayern Munich’s midfield dynamics could shift due to Jamal Musiala’s unfortunate injury, possibly affecting their transfer motives and opening avenues for Palhinha’s acquisition.
On the striker front, whispers continue despite Rasmus Hojlund’s inclination to remain. A lingering flicker of hope exists for capturing Napoli’s Viktor Osimhen, though Romano suggests financial impracticalities may render such ambitions insurmountable.
He said, “Manchester United’s chances hinge not only on price but also on wage discussions. Osimhen’s demands, dwarfed by United’s wage model, pose a formidable barrier.”
