Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has hinted that new £74million striker Benjamin Sesko could be thrown straight into the starting line up against Arsenal on Sunday.
The 21 year old Slovenia international only arrived at Old Trafford last week but is already making a huge impression on his manager. United smashed the bank to bring him in as their marquee summer signing, following the arrivals of £62.5m Matheus Cunha and £71m Bryan Mbeumo in what has been a complete reshaping of the front line.
While Cunha and Mbeumo had a full pre season in the United States to settle in, Sesko has had little more than a handful of training sessions with his new team mates. That, however, does not appear to worry Amorim.
“We have not had a lot of time but he is ready,” the Portuguese coach said on Friday. “Physically he is in great shape and he is very intelligent. He asks questions about every detail and spends hours at Carrington working on his fitness. He is ready to play. Whether he starts, we will see.”
Amorim praised Sesko’s potential and insisted the striker has all the tools to become a long term figure at Old Trafford. “He is going to feel how aggressive the Premier League is but I can see him being United’s striker for many years. That is why the club paid so much money. He will make his own history here.”
There is further good news for United supporters as Joshua Zirkzee and goalkeeper Andre Onana are back in contention after recent knocks. Amorim surprised many in the final pre season game against Fiorentina by not fielding a recognised No 9, leaving Rasmus Hojlund unused on the bench, but it would be a major shock if he went with the same approach against Mikel Arteta’s side.
Behind the scenes at Carrington, sources have spoken glowingly about Sesko’s attitude. Amorim echoed that view. “He is obsessed with football and that is a positive thing. I do not need to warn him about pressure or physicality. With him, I have the opposite concern. He needs to enjoy it a little more.”
