Manchester United’s endeavours to secure a Premier League striker on a cut-price deal have been rebuffed, as Aston Villa have categorically stated that Ollie Watkins is ‘not for sale’. Despite their determination, United may find themselves more successful in pursuing his teammate, Emiliano Martinez.
This summer, United’s transfer focus has sharply centred on enhancing their forward line, with Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko, Nicolas Jackson, and Ollie Watkins on their radar. While Gyokeres appears Arsenal-bound and interest in Sesko has cooled, Watkins and Jackson remain at the centre of speculation.
Recent reports suggested United were engaged in fresh negotiations concerning Watkins, only to be deterred by a £60million valuation they deemed excessive. Villa, however, remain steadfast, maintaining Watkins is unavailable for any price, effectively nullifying any potential transfer.
The possibility of securing Emi Martinez remains, albeit with obstacles. The Argentine goalkeeper has been a target for United since last season. Villa is open to allowing him to leave if their £40million asking price is met. United’s previous attempt, a loan offer, was met with disdain and promptly rejected, though negotiations could be reignited if a satisfactory offer materialises.
Moreover, rumours suggest Martinez might consider a move to Saudi Arabia should the situation with United not progress. He’s been linked with Saudi clubs previously, although a move to Old Trafford is thought to be his preference should an agreement be possible.
Villa’s decision to reject United’s loan proposition for Martinez indicates a stalemate, alongside indications that United’s willingness to meet Villa’s financial demands is waning. Nonetheless, the summer transfer window remains open, and developments could unfold.
Martinez’s move to Saudi Arabia looms as an alternative if the United move fails to materialise, showcasing the complex dynamics and options faced by clubs and players in the ever-competitive transfer market.
