Brentford’s prolific forward Bryan Mbeumo has become the latest target for Manchester United, yet a significant financial hurdle stands in the way of securing a deal. The Red Devils, fresh from spending £62.5 million on Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, have set their sights on the French-born Mbeumo, who netted an impressive 20 goals in the Premier League this past season.
Mbeumo admirably stepped up following Ivan Toney’s departure, not only showcasing his goalscoring prowess but also contributing seven assists in the 2024/25 campaign. With Thomas Frank leaving for Tottenham Hotspur, Brentford appear poised to potentially part ways with yet another key figure, although they are adamant in setting a steep price for their star forward.
As Mbeumo enters the final year of his contract, one that could roll over to 2027 on existing terms, insiders suggest Tottenham Hotspur have also expressed interest. However, The Athletic’s David Ornstein clarified last Friday that Mbeumo has communicated his wish to head to Old Trafford this summer.
“There’s an intent from Mbeumo to join Manchester United, contingent on an agreement being reached between the two clubs,” noted Ornstein. United’s initial bid of £45 million with an additional £10 million in potential add-ons was declined, and a revised offer worth £55 million plus £7.5 million in bonuses also failed to meet Brentford’s expectations. Negotiations appear ongoing as the iconic English club endeavours to navigate this transfer quandary.
Contrary to some claims, Ornstein debunked rumours of a finalised agreement and medical preparations for Mbeumo, relaying that the discussion is far from complete. Duncan Castles, writing for Football Transfers, echoed this sentiment, indicating Manchester United still face challenges due to Brentford’s ‘enormous demand’ for a £70 million guaranteed fee.
“United’s current offer, a mix of guaranteed fees and realistic bonus clauses, tops £60 million,” reported Castles, yet Brentford remain resolute in their £70 million valuation.
Adding to the ongoing saga, Fabrizio Romano offered his insights on Saturday morning, reaffirming the persistence of talks between the two clubs. “Negotiations for Mbeumo to Manchester United are underway with direct contacts. The deal’s structure and add-ons remain crucial as United stay optimistic.”
It seems Manchester United’s pursuit of Mbeumo is set for a protracted contest of wills, as they strive to add the in-demand forward to their ranks.
