Liverpool have once again flexed their financial muscle in the 2025 summer transfer window, topping the spending charts and setting the pace for an extraordinary few months of market activity.
Manchester United have overtaken Arsenal in total outlay, but Liverpool remain clear at the summit, thanks to a string of blockbuster deals.
The headline arrival is Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a staggering £100 million deal, potentially rising to £116 million with add-ons one of the priciest signings in football history. Hugo Ekitike’s move from Eintracht Frankfurt followed, costing around £69 million, with performance-related clauses pushing that figure towards £79 million.
At Old Trafford, United have made a statement of their own, snapping up Benjamin Sesko for £66.2 million, possibly increasing to £73.4 million, and Bryan Mbeumo for £65 million, with a further £6 million in potential add-ons. Arsenal, meanwhile, have strengthened with the acquisition of Martín Zubimendi for £60 million and prolific striker Viktor Gyokeres, among others, as Mikel Arteta’s side looks to close the gap at the top.
When the numbers are totted up, Liverpool’s spending comes in at around £252.2 million enough to lead the Premier League standings in gross expenditure. Chelsea are hot on their heels, having invested roughly £240.2 million in fresh talent as they continue their squad overhaul.
However, Arsenal stand out when it comes to net spend. Their outlay of £185.7 million, with minimal income from sales, is the largest in the division. Liverpool’s net spend is lower at £137.7 million, a result of more significant outgoing transfers helping to offset their headline arrivals.
This summer has been a statement of intent across England’s top clubs. With the Premier League’s elite shelling out vast sums to secure their targets, the stage is set for a fiercely contested season. Liverpool’s capture of Wirtz may prove to be the defining move of the window, but with so many sides strengthening heavily, the race for silverware promises to be as intense and unpredictable as ever.
