Juventus are weighing up a sensational move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali and could be willing to part with striker Dusan Vlahovic to make it happen.
Tonali, 24, became a key figure for Eddie Howe’s side last season after serving a 10-month suspension for breaching betting regulations. The Italian international returned to help the Magpies lift the League Cup and secure a Champions League berth, featuring 45 times across all competitions.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus regard Tonali as a “dream signing” and, despite knowing prising him away from Tyneside will be no easy task, are preparing to test Newcastle’s resolve.
The Turin club are also keeping a watchful eye on the future of Alexander Isak, with speculation the Swedish forward has an eye on a move to Liverpool. They believe Vlahovic could form part of a package to tempt Newcastle, who remain in the hunt for a new striker after missing out on RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko the Slovenian opting instead for Manchester United.
Vlahovic’s future at the Allianz Stadium appears uncertain. The 24-year-old Serbian has just a year remaining on his deal and is reportedly earning £321,000 a week. Juventus are keen to offload his wages after a disappointing campaign in which he struggled for consistency.
Reports suggest former Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz and young Italian prospect Nicolo Savona could also be offered in a player-plus-cash deal, with Juve ready to make a financial sacrifice to land Tonali.
For Newcastle, it’s been a frustrating summer so far. High-profile pursuits of Bryan Mbeumo, Joao Pedro, Matheus Cunha, Marc Guehi and James Trafford have all ended in disappointment, with Sesko’s snub adding to the growing list of near misses.
However, there is still optimism that Brentford’s Yoane Wissa will arrive at St James’ Park before the window closes provided the Bees can secure a replacement.
As it stands, Tonali remains firmly in Newcastle’s plans, but Juventus’ interest coupled with the lure of a return to Serie A ensures this is a transfer story worth watching.
