Marcus Rashford lit up St James’ Park as Barcelona handed Newcastle a ruthless welcome back to the Champions League.
The England forward, shipped out on loan from Manchester United, tore Eddie Howe’s men apart with a deadly second-half double that left the Toon Army stunned and silent.
With England boss Thomas Tuchel watching from the stands, Rashford broke the deadlock on 58 minutes, meeting Jules Kounde’s cross with a precise header that flew past Nick Pope. Nine minutes later came the killer blow as Rashford unleashed a thunderous 20-yard strike that crashed in off the bar. They were his first Champions League goals in nearly four years and he celebrated like a man reborn.
Barcelona fans rose to their feet when Rashford was replaced late on, his job done. Newcastle tried to rally and Anthony Gordon pulled one back deep into stoppage time, but it was far too late to rescue the night.
Howe’s team selection had already raised eyebrows. Record £69m signing Nick Woltemade, bought to fill the void left by Alexander Isak, was left on the bench. Instead Gordon was pushed through the middle, and although he grabbed a consolation, he looked uncomfortable leading the line for much of the game.
Newcastle had their moments. Harvey Barnes fluffed a golden chance midway through the first half after being set up by Anthony Elanga, while the Toon crowd roared themselves hoarse. But once Rashford struck, Barcelona’s class took over. Frenkie de Jong dictated play in midfield, Pedri and Fermin Lopez buzzed around with menace, while Raphinha always carried a threat.
There were echoes of famous European nights when former hero Tino Asprilla appeared in the stands, reminding Geordies of his hat-trick against Barcelona back in 1997. This time, however, the Spanish giants showed no mercy.
Howe’s men were applauded off for their effort, but this was a sharp reminder of the gulf at the very top. For Barcelona, even without teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, it was a show of strength. For Rashford, it was a statement night that could reshape his career.
