Bayern Munich midfielder and Portuguese international João Palhinha has addressed the transfer rumours linking him to Arsenal, clarifying his intention to remain with the German champions.
Reports from the Bundesliga had suggested that Arsenal were interested in securing Palhinha’s services this summer, with negotiations reportedly underway. The speculation surfaced after a challenging inaugural season in Bavaria for Palhinha, who joined Bayern from Fulham in a deal worth £47.4 million but only managed six starts in the Bundesliga under manager Vincent Kompany.
Despite Arsenal’s purported interest, Palhinha has put distance between himself and the rumours. Speaking to Portuguese broadcaster Sport TV, the 30-year-old reaffirmed his commitment to Bayern.
“I have a contract for three more years, so I’ll report for duty on July 29, which is when we start this pre-season,” he stated unequivocally. Addressing the transfer chatter that had been circulating, he added, “As I’ve said several times, and it’s been a recurring question, I have three more years on my contract.”
Although Palhinha conceded that his debut season in Germany did not meet expectations, he remains resolute in his desire to demonstrate his quality at Bayern. “I don’t know what will happen, but I’m at a great club, as I’ve always said,” he declared, adding, “Obviously, it hasn’t been an easy year, but as soon as the season starts, I’m very motivated to prove my worth once again at a very special club, a huge club.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal have been actively reinforcing their midfield this summer, securing the signings of Christian Norgaard from Brentford and Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. Although Palhinha was once touted as a potential recruit, the North London outfit seemingly shifted their focus from him before moving on to other targets.
The Gunners’ transfer activities have recently leaned towards bolstering their attack, with impending deals involving Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera and Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres. Additionally, Arsenal are pursuing Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, although negotiations face a hurdle with his £68 million release clause.
João Palhinha’s recent stance seemingly extinguishes any lingering hopes from Arsenal’s camp of incorporating him into Mikel Arteta’s squad overhaul, as the determined Portuguese aims to make his mark at the Allianz Arena this upcoming season.
