Marcus Rashford, currently on a season-long loan at Barcelona, faces an uncertain summer, with the Catalan giants reportedly considering a move for Manchester City winger Savinho instead.
Rashford’s spell at Manchester United took a tumultuous turn last season, leading to a temporary stint with Aston Villa after a falling out with then-boss Ruben Amorim, who has since been dismissed. The subsequent move to Barcelona included a €30m (£26m) buyout clause. Despite whispers of a potential recall following Amorim’s departure, those have been quashed, especially with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS holding firm on a potential summer sale.
While Rashford has impressed at Camp Nou, the club hesitates on the permanent deal, primarily due to financial constraints and Rashford’s substantial wages. Some within the Manchester United boardroom are expressing regret at the loan agreement, valuing the star closer to £50m after his successful spell in La Liga.
Complicating matters further, Xavier Vilajoana, a contender for the Barcelona presidency, voiced reservations about Rashford’s future at the club. He told ESPN: “One must always assess internal talent before venturing outside. We have emerging players like Jan Virgili, for instance. The decision on Rashford is not solely mine; it will be a collective board decision.”
Reports in Spain suggest Barcelona may pursue City’s Savinho instead. Hansi Flick rates the Brazilian as more suitable than Rashford for the club’s tactical needs. However, this potential transfer isn’t straightforward. Pep Guardiola is reportedly holding out for €45 million, a sum that poses a significant obstacle for Barcelona.
Barcelona’s desire to strengthen with Savinho is complicated by financial constraints, casting doubt on both their pursuit of the Brazilian and Rashford’s permanent move. The situation remains fluid, with financial prudence likely dictating the outcome of these potential transfers.
